Trial in Beijing for espionage

After more than two years in detention, former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig was put on trial in Beijing for espionage. Diplomats from 26 countries who were barred from attending Kovrig's trial. The diplomats' attandance is but guaranteed in an agreement signed by Canada and China in 1999. The case was said to be classified as "national secret". China claims that the diplomat's attendance could impact China's judicial sovereignity.
